Description
A night view with the crescent new moon above the modern Ponte da Arrabida road bridge in Porto, Portugal. Bottom right is part of the historic La Ribeira district in the Old Town, part of the Historic Centre of Porto, a UNESCO registered World Heritage Site. The reinforced concrete arched bridge is the furthest downstream of the city's bridges and carries a motorway across the River Douro between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (on the left / south side of the river). Construction started in May 1957 and the bridge opened in June 1963. At the time of its completion the 890ft / 270m main span was the longest of any concrete-arch bridge in the world.
