Description
Brick houses in the suburb of Pampahasi, which sprawls along a ridge on the eastern side of the city of La Paz, Bolivia glow in the late afternoon sunlight. In the background the peaks of the Serranias Murillo range rise dramatically, with a winter snowfall from the night before enhancing their jagged ridges. The Serranias Murillo is a mini-range that is part of the Cordillera Real, the longest and highest Andean mountain range in Bolivia. The peaks on the right make up Mt Khasiri / Q'asiri (5224m / 17,139 ft), the black triangular peak left of centre is Cerro Tigra Killa (5230m / 17,60ft). Few cities enjoy as spectacular setting as La Paz (Bolivia's administrative capital); the city centre is at an altitude around 3650m / 11,975 ft in a huge valley below the Andes Mountains. It's higher suburbs and sister city of El Alto are over 4000m / 13,125ft high, the lowest suburbs are nearly 1000m / 3,300ft lower down!
