Description
Brick houses on a steep hillside in the suburb of Pampahasi, which sprawls along a ridge on the eastern side of the city of La Paz, Bolivia. In the background the peaks of the Serranias Murillo range rise dramatically, with a winter snowfall from the night before enhancing their jagged ridges. The Serranias Murillo is a mini-range that is part of the Cordillera Real, the longest and highest Andean mountain range in Bolivia. The peak in the shadow left of centre is Mt Jathi Qullu / Jathi Khollu (there are various spellings, 5421m / 17,785 ft), the black triangular peak on the right is Cerro Tigra Killa (5230m / 17,60ft). Few cities enjoy as spectacular setting as La Paz (Bolivia's administrative capital); the city centre is at an altitude around 3650m / 11,975 ft in a huge valley below the Andes Mountains. It's higher suburbs and sister city of El Alto are over 4000m / 13,125ft high, the lowest suburbs are nearly 1000m / 3,300ft lower down!
