Description
A view looking downstream along the River Douro in Porto, Portugal, with some of the colourful old buildings in the city's historic La Ribeira district in the foreground. In the background is the Ponte da Arrabida road bridge, the furthest downstream of the city's bridges. The black cloaked figure on yellow in the centre is the symbol of the Sandeman wine and port company. Sandeman is one of the better known brands of port and sherry wines and was founded in 1790 by the brothers George and David Sandeman from Perth, Scotland. It remained a family business until the drinks company Seagram bought it in 1979. It is now owned by Sogrape; a descendant, George Thomas David Sandeman, is still a board member. Riberia is part of the Historic Centre of Oporto registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
